Musharyanti, L., Claramita, M., Haryanti, F., & Dwiprahasto, I. (2019). Why do nursing students make medication errors? A qualitative study in Indonesia. Journal of Taibah University Medical Sciences, 14(3), 282–288. The current article outlines the various investigated reasons that lead to nursing students making medication errors leading to various compromises to patient safety (Musharyanti et al., 2019). The study explored Indonesian students’ acuities of the various causes and types of medication errors in medical rotations (Musharyanti et al., 2019). The study included a descriptive study on 26 nursing students who finished their clinical rotations at the time of the study. The data was collected through four focus group discussions, and analysis was via Colaizzi’s technique (Musharyanti et al., 2019). The study postulates that nurses are responsible for dispensing medication and ensuring patient safety, but there are various errors during medical rotations (Musharyanti et al., 2019). The errors are caused mainly by nursing students with inadequate knowledge, lack of proper supervision, and lack of appropriate role models. The resource helps the nurses recruit new nurses from school to understand the leading causes of the nursing students’ medication errors and include appropriate initiatives to reduce the errors and ensure patient safety (Musharyanti et al., 2019). Nurses can use the information in the article to understand that appropriate role model and adequate supervision are essential in ensuring that there are fewer errors with the nursing students and thus ensuring that patient safety is a priority.
