Project Title: Qualitative Biomechanical Analysis in Badminton Sports
Abstract
Biomechanics has a significant role in the sports of badminton. There have been several studies recently that have improved the understanding of biomechanics in sports. Badminton has been among the most known sports in the world, with close to 200 million supporters. Previously, the analysis of player’s movements like shuttle trajectory, smashing, and servicing were mainly qualitatively undertaken with significant human involvement. The sport of badminton incorporates various types of forces. They include the applied gravity, tension, air resistance, and friction forces. The mission of this paper is to explore the movement analysis involved in badminton and how Newtons laws can be applied in the coaching of this popular sport.

Introduction
Badminton has been among the most known sports in the world, with close to 200 million supporters. It is categorized under racquet sports that involve two to four individuals. It has a sequential structure organized by short-duration actions that are of high intensity (Phomsoupha et al., 2015). It was invented in India in the 19th century during British colonization. It was often played at armed centers in several cities of India. It is documented that integrating quality skills in mechanical, tactical, anthropometric, bodily, and psychological skills is required to yield great performance in badminton ( Elferink-Gemser et al., 2011). It was also referred to as battledore and shuttlecock during those days. The analysis of human motion has been reviewed severally. Human motion has been categorized into human motion tracking, analysis of body movement, and human activity recognition in the reviews. Biomechanics in badminton includes a comprehensive sports movement analysis to reduce the injury risks and consequently improve the performance of the sport. The sport of badminton incorporates various forces; they have the applied gravity, tension, air resistance, and friction forces. The three of Newton’s laws of motion and their application to various badminton aspects have been discussed.
Application of Newtons laws in the badminton sport
Newtons law # 1. When an object is resting or in motion at a constant velocity, it tends to continue resting or moving unless acted on by an unstable force. There is no movement of the shuttlecock; you will have to hit it. The direction, in this case, remains constant. For example, in badminton, inertia is observed when striking the shuttlecock on a serve. Upon dropping the shuttlecock, it will be moving slowly until the racquet acts upon it. With the badminton smash, the player must first prepare herself in advance. . During the slam performance in badminton, it is crucial to consider the inertia force. The inertia force operates against the racket resulting in a force somewhere between.
Newtons law # 2. The summation of all the forces is given by mass(m) times acceleration(a) that is F = ma
It defines how fast the shuttlecock will move when hit. Force is applied in the racket. Therefore, force and acceleration are the main factors that influence the shuttlecock direction. When the shuttlecock is smashed into the air, the force involved is equal to the acceleration multiplied by the shuttlecock’s mass. The player has to prepare her or himself in advance for the shuttlecock inertia. Thus, the accurate smashing of the shuttlecock and at a reasonable speed. The greater the applied force, the faster the smashing acceleration. Achievement of acceleration becomes very tough to attain on a shutter lock. The shuttlecock mass is too minimal that even with the immense force amount fails to have a considerable impact. To solve this issue, the slam works by concentrating more on the direction and not the force. The fundamental principles of biomechanics that ought to be considered are the summation of force. This involves muscle sequencing, balance, and stability. This is the gravity line center, and not forgetting the projectile movement that includes the release speed, release height, and angle. Placing of the badminton serve into action includes summation force and muscles sequencing. The timing and sequencing of body parts are from the legs to the hands through the hips, trunk, shoulders, and arms. It is advisable to involve a robust base to initiate the movement to make the knees bent, extend the knees in case of jumping, twisting the trunk, and then spreading the shoulder and then raising the arm that creates a flicking motion at the end of the smash. This is referred to as plantar flexion of the wrist.
Newtons # 3. For every action, there exists a similar and opposite reaction. For example, when the player hits the shuttlecock. When hit, it bounces back once it hit the racket. Every action bears an equivalent and an opposite reaction. Application of this Newton’s last law to the badminton slam confirms that the ideal time smash the shuttlecock is hardly hit by the opponent since the response is the same. Therefore, the slam will have a cumulative force applied by the opponent and the slam to be made. There are many actions and reactions in badminton sport, and the ideal example is in the smash. When some force is exerted on the shuttlecock, the same amount and opposite force come back via the racquet. This will make the racquet bounce backward.
