Organizational Structure and Culture for Google
Organizational Structure
Organizational structure refers to the manner in which a company’s activities such as supervisions, coordination, and task allocation are directed to accomplish organizational goals (Král & Králová, 2016). Organizational structure is essential in an organization as it promotes efficiency and ensures that employees and the management remain focused on their goals.
Google operates on a flat organizational structure with a wide span of control (Green et al., 2020). In this structure, the employees, low-level managers, and top-level managers have equal distribution in authority. Koohborfardhaghighi and Altmann (2017) assert that companies with flat organizational structure have no or few management levels between the employees and management levels. Thus, employees have the ability to make decisions thus improving efficiency by eliminating challenges associated with bureaucracy. A flat organizational structure increases the level of autonomy and authority that individuals have in an organization. Google company has few levels of management which indicate that they have total belief in their employees work and knowledge (Tran, 2017). Low levels of management encourage the employees and the managers to communicate and work together. This structure boosts the company’s transparency, openness, and motivates employees.
Communication is also an important aspect in an organization and it largely affects the performance of a company and employee interactions. In Google, the company has adopted the open communication style where the employees and the managers can express their ideas (Green et al., 2020). Leaders and management in Google company act as mentors, and employees can easily communicate with them in all channels. This mode of communication allows for a better employee interaction in the company (Green et al., 2020). Employees develop positive attitudes and morale int their work when they feel valued and are able to communicate about issues and ideas in the work place. Google has ensured that the managers will listen and respond to employees by reducing the management levels and at the same time maintaining an open communication style.
