Medication Treatment of PTSD
Although posttraumatic stress disorder has no specific drug for treatment, the doctors usually a certain antidepressant drug, and the drug have been used for many years. Antidepressant drug helps in controlling anxiety feeling and other symptoms that are associated with PTSD. Some of the used antidepressant medications include; Tricyclic antidepressants, e.g. Doxepin and Elavil. Then there are the mood stabilizer antidepressants like Lamictal, Also, there are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, e.g. Zoloft and Celexa, and lastly, there is antipsychotics i.e. Ability and Seroquel (Chung, AlQarni & AlMazrouei, 2018).
The doctors can also recommend some certain drugs used for hypertension to control PTSD symptoms like, Clonidine drug which highly help to control the issue of sleep. Also, prazosin drug is normally used as it enable the patient to control any problem they may experience while they are asleep, e.g. the nightmares and hallucinations. Lastly, Propranblo is used to help in reducing any formation of a deeper traumatic memory. However, the medical specialists are highly discouraging the PTSD patients on the use of tranquilizer like Klonopin or Ativan as these drugs has no study history of reducing any symptom of PTSD and they are also associated with some harmful chemicals which affects people and they may become addicted to it and thus, it can result to drug abuse.
