Major depressive disorder- This disorder affects mood, behaviors, and physical functions like appetite (Malhi et al., 2018). Some of the patient’s symptoms that make her have this disorder are suicidal thoughts, depressive mood, crying a lot, reduced appetite, insomnia, slow esteem, and lack of interest, especially in things she used to do.
Postpartum blues. It refers to the low mood as well as mild depressive signs that are transient and self-restricted (Kripa Balaram & Raman Marwaha, 2021). It is characterized by crying, irritability, lack of sleep, and appetites changes. Some of the patient symptoms leading to this diagnosing are excessive crying,
mood swings, reduced appetite, and lack of sleep.
Reflections:
From the case scenario, I have learned that many mood disorders such as postpartum depression happen from 4-6 weeks after delivery. Besides, I have learned other mood illnesses, like major depressive and postpartum blues, which have the same symptoms as postpartum depression. Healthcare providers should analyze factors associated with mood conditions to make a better diagnosis. A legal consideration that should be considered during the client’s treatment is medication safety to the baby. The decision for lactating moms to take drugs should involve considering the possible risks and effectiveness of drugs to the baby (Shorey et al., 2018).
