Inviting Participation with Thumbs-Up Responses
In this clip, the teacher aims to make sure full participation of the students by discouraging raising hands to answer questions. The classroom is managed by one teacher training 11 students of both genders who are approximately 12 to 13 years of age. The teacher feels that raising hands discourages full participation as some students are quick to figure out solutions. In that case, the slow students will not see the need to expand their thinking as they will not see the need to answer because someone else can answer. The management skills of the teacher are excellent as she makes sure that all the students feel the need to participate. It is clearly observable that, all students actively participate as they express their satisfaction in the teacher’s technique and the freedom they feel while in class, proving that the method was effective. In this case, I totally agree with the methods that the applied and see them as important in my classes as well.
