Patterns of Crime
Introduction
The concept of crime pattern explains all the possible reasons that influence individuals to engage in any criminal activities. In most cases, crimes are either opportunistic or prearranged, but it is never accidental. According to a study, crime occurs only when the victims and the criminals activity space happens to intersect; in simple terms, the space activity comprises the places individuals spent most of their time, for example, in shopping centers. Additionally, some areas are more prone to criminal activities than other places; the areas include restaurants, leisure parks and shopping centers. Crime happens mostly in congested and busy places because, in such places, there are both potential criminals and targets. In the essay, I will illuminate the crime patterns and their impacts concerning New Orleans (Hewitt, Ashley N., et al 35).
According to research, offenders experience several opportunities of crime on different occasions from which they then plan the whole misconduct. For instance, a target can innocently enter a criminal space by entering a restaurant; if the restaurant is located near or around criminal areas, the chance is the criminal activities will corrupt the target’s space. Therefore, understanding crime pattern aids many detectives and analysts in solving criminal activities by providing possible strategies. Both the persistent and the occasional criminals try to live an ordinary life by engaging in any authentic activity just like ordinary individuals. The structure of a residential area is the major factor that influences the shape and dynamics of criminal activity; for instance, crowded places experience a high tendency or criminal activities compared to the less crowded areas.
Crime pattern in New Orleans
According to research, New Orleans is the leading city in Louisiana state in the united states with the highest percentage of crime rates; in every one thousand individuals, sixty-six individuals are the targets. In 2019, the city recorded one hundred and twenty-one cases of murder, and the analyst ranked it number four of all the top cities with the highest cases of murder. Additionally, research shows that in the whole nation, the city has been recording the highest number of cases since 1993; during the next year, there were four hundred and forty-four cases of homicide, and the rate was 86 homicide cases in every 100,000 individuals. New Orleans has been trying new strategies to curb the growing challenge for over two decades now (Feng, Mingchen, et al 63).
Crimes in the city are more concentrated in disadvantaged and crowded neighborhoods than in fortunate neighborhoods. According to a study, most males from low-income families face jail time because of engaging in criminal activities; these males are mostly Latinos and blacks. Throughout 2011, 97% of the offenders were from the black community, and 7% were females making the bigger percentage male. The victims, on the other hand, were mostly blacks, and only 9% were whites. Historically, the city has recorded the highest cases of homicide countrywide since the 1970s. From 1994 to 2013, the city was reporting around 200 cases of murder, and it was among the leading city hence many individuals named the city the “murder capital.”
In 2010, Kaiser foundation conducted a poll for individuals in New Orleans to share their thoughts about their citys situation. Many residents expressed their views on how crime was the leading challenge in the city; they felt that crime had the same intensity, just like the other problems such as joblessness, housing, economy, and poor healthcare facilities. Many people often ask this one question; why does New Orleans record many crimes more than other similarly poor and same-sized cities. Atlanta and New Orleans have some equal traits, such as almost the same total number of residents, level of deficiency and topography, but their crime rates differ (Weil, Frederick D., et al 98)
According to a research, poverty is normally the major reason that influences the crime rates in a city; the poorer the residents, the more they engage in criminal activities to survive. The other factors that influence the criminal activities in a city include unequal distribution of resources in the regions, unemployment, little or no income, poor education, unrestricted gun acquisition and high incarceration rates. All these problems many deprived cities experiences tend to influence their crime rates. However, after considering all the above aspects, some cities appear more unfortunate than New Orleans but do not record so many crime rates the way New Orleans does.
According to US Census Bureau, poverty is when an individual in four makes 24000 dollars yearly or any person that makes less than 12000 dollars yearly. However, the decision does not consider millions of other individuals that suffer in their daily lives and that their problems might initiate them to engaging in criminal activities. The other emerging cause is multidimensional poverty; this is when individuals experience more than one challenge, for example, poverty and poor education or poor medical services and little income. Many residents in New Orleans belong in a certain Bill where many individuals take jobs that pay poorly and where many government schools still offer poor education
(Frailing, Kelly, Thomas Zawisza, and Dee Wood Harper 96).
Additionally, researchers argued that there is a connection between crime and poverty; using the past recorded criminal activities, the cause that usually leads to these crimes is mostly no or little income. The chance and desperation, in most cases, inspire an individual to commit a crime; desperation influences an individual to take the risk and visualize a chance. According to research, multidimensional poverty affects 19 percent of male residents in New Orleans, explaining the several criminal activities in the area. Additionally, the city appears to be the second city that experiences income inequality countrywide, meaning that the top 5% in the city went through rough times.
Conclusion
To conclude, there are always some aspects that influence crime, leading many individuals to engage in criminal activities. For instance, in New Orleans, poverty is the major factor influencing criminal activities in some deprived parts of the city. Additionally, factors such as low income, unequal distribution of resources and multidimensional poverty have also influenced the crime rates in the city. Before any offender commits criminal activity, they are always under the influence of desperation and opportunity.
