Creating Psychologically Safe Healthcare Teams
Nurse executives play a significant role in enhancing psychological safety in healthcare as they lead their teams (O Donovan & 2020). Nurse leaders must take deliberate actions and activities to improve a teams’ effectiveness towards its goals. Psychological safety provides healthcare workers to initiate interpersonal risks without censorship fears to achieve the universal and institutional goals in healthcare. Some of the essential concepts in the phenomenon include learning behavior, silence, support, voice, and familiarity.
There are several ways a nurse executive can create a psychologically safe environment through interventions. The interventions are critical in shaping the healthcare workers’ mindset, perceptions, and behavior towards their patients and their teal=m leaders. The first step is to establish the current environment’s safety through an open discussion forum with all the stakeholders in the departmental unit. This step must be facilitated by an individual who can quickly gain trust. This will help the team members give honest answers. Once there are solid conclusions its time to implement the necessary changes and steps to create a better environment (Rease, 2017)
