Complementary and Alternative Medicine
Complementary and alternative medicine is a group of diverse medical and healthcare systems, therapy and products that are not presently considered conventional medicine. The use of complementary and alternative medicine has dramatically increased during the past decade and is used by substantial proportions of the general populations of several countries. According to (Esmail 2017), complementary and alternative medicine use increased significantly in the USA between 1990 and 1997. The development of technology expansion of this practice in the medical sphere has led to an increase in research and modern techniques in treatment. However, alternative medicine has been perceived as critical in treating individuals through the use of therapies in determining the viability and suitability of the treatment options. This results from the desire for individual empowerment and patient dissatisfaction with medicine, and an increase in the relative cost of conventional health care.
Economic and socio-cultural factors influence the use of all types of medicine. In economically disadvantaged societies where access to biomedical services is lacking, there is evidence of a pervasive reliance on traditional healers, even for serious diseases. In affluent countries where biomedical services are more accessible, substantial complementary and alternative medicine is used for illness prevention and health promotion purposes. There is also evidence that this technique is frequently used as an adjunct to biomedical treatment by patients with serious diseases such as cancer and self-manage long-term health complaints like low back pain. Complementary and alternative medicine use appears to be driven more by congruence with values and beliefs than by dissatisfaction with biomedicine. The actual rate of complementary and alternative medicine differs between countries because of economic, social, and cultural factors.
However, complementary and alternative medicine has several advantages: one of the best advantages that alternative medicine offers is that it heals the body and is designed to treat the cause of the pain or disease.
According to (Barnet 2014), these remedies have no adverse effects; they advocate a self-help technique that is attractive to patients and offer a holistic approach. By understanding and treating the disease, professionals can work at the root of the problem. Secondly, people often use complementary therapies to help them feel better and cope with treatment; many complementary therapies concentrate on relaxation and reducing stress. They help to calm emotions, relieve anxiety, and increase a general sense of health and well-being. Many doctors are interested in the idea that positive emotions can improve health. Thirdly, complementary and alternative medicines help boost the body’s immune system, thus having a positive outlook. This is a way to feel positive and hopeful for the future. Lastly, these medicines help to control some symptoms and also treats the side effects. For example, Acupuncture helps relieve a sore mouth throat after having treatment for head and neck cancer. The practitioners often spend significant time with their patients, which makes the patient feel as if he or she has been given careful attention.
Disadvantages of complementary and alternative medicine include; lack of standardization of either the practice or the dispensing of the therapies and techniques. In addition, for many of these modalities, no standard format exists to ensure that practitioners are adequately trained in the methods they use. One big concern is that, with alternative treatments, the delay in mainstream medicine can allow cancer to grow and spread to other parts of the body. Another is that some complementary and alternative therapies have been reported to cause serious problems or even deaths.
Culture influences the expectations about how person-to-person interactions occur. Additionally, culture influences how we understand health and healing. If you talk with a professional trained in addressing mental health concerns, there is hope for an individual to improve or feel better (Fischer, 2014). Mental health treatments can be more effective when they align with the client’s culture and when therapists demonstrate multicultural competence.
Children and adolescents, or teens, built social skillsandemotional intelligenceas they grow. These things often lead to healthy, happy lives. But some kids have emotions or behave in ways that disrupt their well-being. Therefore, learning about children’s mental health issues can increase your knowledge of how to help. Specific skills can teach you to interact more effectively with your child. Seeing a therapist can teach you these skills. A therapistmay also benefit children or teens. Therapy can be a safe space for kids to process thoughts and emotions.
When individuals are exposed to risks and uncertainties, they seek self-care measures and resort to non-conventional solutions. This helps to demonstrate their autonomy, mitigate the risk, and make the situation more manageable. Thus, conventional and alternative medicine among infectious disease patients has gained popularity over the past decades. A growing body of literature highlights its use against the threat of new and emerging infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS. The widespread popularity of conventional and alternative medicine supplements has brought attention to both a knowledge and a communication gap for health care professionals concerning being able to appropriately counsel patients about these treatments. A lack of evidence-based information about efficacy, safety, and drug interactions with conventional and alternative medicine therapies, as well as a lack of formal training, is thought to be responsible for this deficit.
Technologyhas placed at the disposal of thehealthcarecommunity various potent tools to improve patientcare. Virtual reality devices and apps help ease symptoms of depression and anxiety in older people and patients with mental illnesses and can also help people withtheirpostoperative recovery process. Technology adoption decisions pose a challenge to decision-makers who are often forced to make timely decisions regarding new technologies before there is definitive evidence on their clinical efficacy and economic merit. Hospitals, among other healthcare providers, have to develop their decision criteria for strategic technology planning concerning their particular environment. Alternative treatments already existing in the hospital are affected in the process of adopting technology.
In conclusion, using specific complementary alternative medicine should be made primarily depending on whether they are safe and effective. Furthermore, alternative therapies are not guaranteed to be safe. Complementary therapies can help people cope with the side effects of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.
