Are piercings and tattoos acceptable in your industry?
Although no law explicitly prohibits piercings and tattoos in my industry, employers can make hiring decisions based on visible tattoos and piercings. Moreover, piercings and tattoos are greatly frowned upon in my industry. My industry involves dealing with children; hence administration and parents may feel that having such on their body and openly showing it can negatively influence the students. While many people in my industry have piercings and tattoos, they cover them up during work hours.
Have you seen this perception differ from one workplace to the next in your industry? Why?
Yes. The perception on whether body piercing and tattoos are professional in my industry will vary from one workplace to another depending on the social norms and age of the workforce and leadership. However, the practice of covering up the tattoos, primarily to protect one professional image, is dominant.
